At Anini Beach

Blue water stretches the horizon’s curve—

a fringe of breakers

foams at the reef’s edge,

lifts the eye to the folded hills:

Namolokama,

Mamalohoa,

their green flanks holding back

an armada of white clouds.

In my hand, four bars on the cell

connect me to the day’s

disasters—the masters of oil

will rule the nation, pipelines

eviscerate the heartland’s

prairie, while arctic ice

withers in the winter’s heat.

It’s so hard to believe in the end

of beauty here—

in warmth and fragrance,

and the eye’s pleasure in every direction:

wild roosters strut

among the striped towels

and beach chairs,

sparrows begging scraps

get the half peanut

fallen to the sand,

black crabs scuttle over lava stones,

tumbled at the end of the bay.

And the sea’s unstoppable glistening,

holds sway in the tender air.
